SNAP Update, Jan. 29, 9:17 am

The cutting of SNAP funding comes out of Illinois, via Gov. J.B. Pritzker who directly contradicts what the White House said. ALL federal funds were blocked. Medicaid was blocked. Head Start was blocked, as were programs like Meals on Wheels, unemployment and HEAP — all blocked, he said.

And while he does not refer specifically to SNAP by name, Pritzker specifically talks about grocery money being blocked. The issue was blamed on a coincidental federal website outage, and then the White House walked back the total blockage assertion from the previous night — claiming that funds for individuals would not be held up.

But in fact they were. As of now the whole funding cut concept, a facet of Project 2025, has been stayed by a federal judge, so funds for all programs should be available at this time.

Note 1/29 early am: The White House is claiming that federal benefits to individuals will not be cut, including SNAP food benefits. They are also claiming that Medicaid benefits will not be cut, which contradicts news reports I saw Tuesday. Events are moving so fast it’s impossible to keep up. I will verify the SNAP issue, though I will believe it when I hear from recipients that their cards still work. The example as what disembodiment would look like still stands: an embodied response would be feeding people. — efc
